The new Canon DreamLabo 5000 for beautiful photo prints
By Databazaar Blog
Canon recently entered the photo printing market with its brand new product, the DreamLabo 5000. It uses new fine high density print head technology to produce high quality photo prints in a relatively lesser time. Merging high precision jets with ink spray technology delivers the ink consistently with high precision resulting in high resolution print output. DreamLabo uses seven dye-based inks to provide a wider range of colors and shades. This enables extra smooth gradation in color and B&W photos, stable color reproduction and less color cast. Canon recommends using its genuine paper for printing for quick, shallow ink fixation and hence, more vivid color expression.
Seven fixed line print heads and 2400 dpi high density jets rapidly eject large quantities of ink in a single pass, giving a high print speed of up to 40 copies (10 x 15cm) per minute. DreamLabo also has inbuilt features for automatic double-sided printing and on-demand two sided document printing. Disposal of processing chemicals or direct contact with chemicals is eliminated by the ink jet process.
Canon DreamLabo 5000 thus produces beautiful photo prints of high quality and resolution in an amazingly short period of time. An ideal answer to our photo printing needs.
Summary
The Canon DreamLabo 5000 realizes color representation rivaling that of conventional silver halide processing, delivering high speed printing of high-quality photos and detailed text to support a variety of value-added output, from photo merchandise to high-quality POD (Print on Demand) offerings.Manufacturer

How Can I Print Greeting Cards Like a Pro?
By Sean Doherty
PrinTip: The Right Tools to Print Gorgeous Greetings
'Tis the season… for season's greetings. And thanks to advances in home printer technology, you can print professional-grade greeting cards using your own photographs and text. The secret? Pulling together the right templates included in licensed software like Microsoft Word, along with software supplied online from companies like Brother, Canon, HP and standby greeting-card suppliers like Hallmark.
Whether or not your cards will look like they were professionally printed depends on the capability of your printer and the texture of paper you select. If you only have a monochrome printer, your options are pretty, well, black and white. To print greeting cards like a pro, you first need a color inkjet printer capable of printing high-resolution images such as photographs and stock images in vibrant colors surrounded by clear, sharp text. A printer with a color resolution of 9600 x 2400 dots per inch and 600 x 600 dpi in black and white should do the job. The printer should also support 8.5 x 11-inch media because you'll need to print out and fold cards to the appropriate size.
To get you started, look at color inkjet printers from Brother and Epson, Canon PIXMA printers and HP Photosmart printers. Color inkjet printers capable of quality greeting cards are between $100 and $200. If you send a lot of cards over the holidays, you'll see your return on your investment pretty much right away. In the meantime, here are a few more tips to help you spread the holiday cheer.
Use the Manufacturer's Ink
You can save money by using ink from third party manufacturers, but if professional results are what you seek, use the ink supplied by the printer manufacturer. Name brand ink is designed to work with the manufacturer's printer nozzles to supply the highest quality of output for the printer of your choice. Proprietary ink is also designed to work with special, glossy paper to help make your photographs and images stand out.
Use Premium Paper
You don't have to use paper supplied by your printer manufacturer. As long as it the paper in question features a glossy wax coating to reduce ink absorption and allow ink to dry quickly on the page, your output will honor your printer's high resolution. Of course, your printer manufacturer knows exactly how much ink is sprayed onto a sheet to determine the optimal amount of gloss to add to paper, so if you're concerned about quality, you can always compare and contrast.
And remember, envelopes are the first part of the greeting-card experience, so unless you have a knack for origami, buy them pre-made. A beautiful card wrapped in toilet paper will be remembered, but not for the message inside.

Sometimes useful, sometimes fun, and always interesting, PrinTips enable you to get more out of your ink jet or laser printer. That said, we don't profess to have a monopoly on printer tips so if you have anything to add, please do so below.

Canon's PIXMA MG5120: An Affordable Photo Inkjet Printer
By Sean Doherty
Printer News: New Canon PIXMA Printers Line Up for Fast, Easy, Affordable Photo Printing
Want to save money? Who doesn't? Canon's PIXMA MG5120 is yet another photo inkjet printer with Full HD Movie Print software, enabling you to capture photos from frames of movies created by Canon EOS Digital SLR or Powershot cameras, but this printer costs just a little over $100 — way less than some of its competitors.
We've already covered the PIXMA MP280, PIXMA MP495 and the PIXMA iP4820. When the MG5120 steps out of the lineup, it aims to serve 4 x 6-inch borderless photos in 39 seconds and deliver photos up to 8.5 x 11 inches in size to a maximum of 9600 x 2400 dots-per-inch color resolution — all for a little over a hundo.
Just like the rest of the new PIXMA line, you can plug your camera directly into the MG5120 and preview images on a 2.4-inch color LCD before you print. At the console, the printer's Auto Photo Fix II software automatically corrects your photos with light-source recognition (a color-cast correction feature is only available when you print from a Windows or Mac computer).
The printer comes with Easy-WebPrint EX software, which lets you gather and edit multiple web pages while creating a personal print layout. A new Fit-to-One-Page feature compresses web pages onto a single sheet at the click of a mouse, but it's only available for mice connected to Windows PCs.

Is Your Multifunction Printer Spilling Your Secrets?
By Sean Doherty
DoubleSided: Copy and Print Jobs Stored on Your MFP Could Become Public
Recently the press had a field day with a CBS news report about how digital copiers can become a repository of your deepest and darkest secrets. The story, which is still reverberating in the legal sector, pointed out that digital copiers contain hard drives that store an image of every document copied, scanned, printed or emailed through the machine.
Just the Facts, Please
It's true, many multifunction printers operating in large enterprises do feature hard drives, as do many consumer multifunction printers. But even if your printer does include a hard drive, it's not storing information the same way the hard drive on your computer is storing and capturing data.
When an MFP receives print requests, it stores those requests as print jobs in a queue. If the number and size of the jobs is more than the amount of physical RAM in the printer, the printer will temporarily store the jobs on an internal hard disk before returning them to RAM and printing them. (If the printer does not feature a hard disk, it will store all print jobs in RAM).
If your printer does store print jobs temporarily, it converts them into bitmap images in a job control language that the printer can understand. This language is obscure enough that not just any Joe Schmo can open up the files and print the images easily. What's more, depending on how busy the printer is, it might constantly overwrite jobs stored on the disk with new copy, scan and print jobs in the cue.
If you elect to send secure prints to the printer and pick them up when you enter a code at the console, then your printer might store jobs on the disk until you complete the task. However, you can elect to set up private boxes for users who regularly print, scan, and fax jobs containing secrets you'd rather not make public. Note that if your MFP does not feature a hard disk, it will not offer you this capability.
Tips for Printer Security
First, don't scrimp on the amount of RAM for any printer used by more than one employee. Plan on purchasing the maximum amount of RAM supported by the printer. Doing so ensures your printer will print faster and will not store print jobs on the hard disk to await printing. Next, do not enable the secure print feature. And lastly, do not set up public and private boxes for users to store jobs.
If you want to use the features associated with an internal hard drive, look into your printer's security measures. Some manufacturers, like Canon and Ricoh, include add-on security features in their printers that can encrypt the hard drive, automatically overwrite data on it, and wipe it clean when the printer reaches its end of life in your organization. Other manufacturers, like Konica Minolta, include those features along with others, like a hard drive lock password and automatic deletion of jobs stored in user boxes.
For real security-minded (read: paranoid) professionals, don't waste time overwriting the data on a printer that has reached its end of life. Simply remove the drive and destroy the disk platter. Doing so will not diminish the resale value of the printer.
And finally, if you are worried that your printer's hard drive may contain information that you might need to produce in the event of future litigation, rest easy. To date, no court has targeted multifunction printers with hard drives in its data retention policy. Sorry CBS.
