Konica Minolta Magicolor 4750 Series Packs In the Color

By Sean Doherty

Printer News: Konica Minolta Compact Laser Printer Delivers Big Color

DBZ-103-PN-500

Following the adage good things come in small packages, Konica Minolta's new magicolor 4750 series color printers, the 4750EN and 4750DN (for duplexing), are the smallest A4 (8.5 x 11-inch) color printers on the market. Konica Minolta designed the printers with lightweight functionality in mind — crafting them 30 percent smaller than previous models. Indeed, they stand just over a foot high and weigh in at less than 50 pounds — but just like lightweight champion boxers, these little suckers really pack a punch.

The 4750 printers include an 800 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM, expandable to 756 MB. That hardware offers 31 pages per minute in color and black-and-white, the first page out in less than 12.9 seconds, and a duty cycle of 120,000 pages per month.

The smaller design means fewer movable parts. That can translate to a longer useful life for you, but doesn't limit your options. The printers still have room for an optional 40 GB internal IDE hard disk to add job retention features and an optional paper tray to increase paper capacity to 850 sheets. The additional tray supports both letter- and legal-sized media.

Is Your Multifunction Printer Spilling Your Secrets?

By Sean Doherty

DoubleSided: Copy and Print Jobs Stored on Your MFP Could Become Public

DBZ-92-DS-500

Recently the press had a field day with a CBS news report about how digital copiers can become a repository of your deepest and darkest secrets. The story, which is still reverberating in the legal sector, pointed out that digital copiers contain hard drives that store an image of every document copied, scanned, printed or emailed through the machine.

Just the Facts, Please

It's true, many multifunction printers operating in large enterprises do feature hard drives, as do many consumer multifunction printers. But even if your printer does include a hard drive, it's not storing information the same way the hard drive on your computer is storing and capturing data.

When an MFP receives print requests, it stores those requests as print jobs in a queue. If the number and size of the jobs is more than the amount of physical RAM in the printer, the printer will temporarily store the jobs on an internal hard disk before returning them to RAM and printing them. (If the printer does not feature a hard disk, it will store all print jobs in RAM).

If your printer does store print jobs temporarily, it converts them into bitmap images in a job control language that the printer can understand. This language is obscure enough that not just any Joe Schmo can open up the files and print the images easily. What's more, depending on how busy the printer is, it might constantly overwrite jobs stored on the disk with new copy, scan and print jobs in the cue.

If you elect to send secure prints to the printer and pick them up when you enter a code at the console, then your printer might store jobs on the disk until you complete the task. However, you can elect to set up private boxes for users who regularly print, scan, and fax jobs containing secrets you'd rather not make public. Note that if your MFP does not feature a hard disk, it will not offer you this capability.

Tips for Printer Security

First, don't scrimp on the amount of RAM for any printer used by more than one employee. Plan on purchasing the maximum amount of RAM supported by the printer. Doing so ensures your printer will print faster and will not store print jobs on the hard disk to await printing. Next, do not enable the secure print feature. And lastly, do not set up public and private boxes for users to store jobs.

If you want to use the features associated with an internal hard drive, look into your printer's security measures. Some manufacturers, like Canon and Ricoh, include add-on security features in their printers that can encrypt the hard drive, automatically overwrite data on it, and wipe it clean when the printer reaches its end of life in your organization. Other manufacturers, like Konica Minolta, include those features along with others, like a hard drive lock password and automatic deletion of jobs stored in user boxes.

For real security-minded (read: paranoid) professionals, don't waste time overwriting the data on a printer that has reached its end of life. Simply remove the drive and destroy the disk platter. Doing so will not diminish the resale value of the printer.

And finally, if you are worried that your printer's hard drive may contain information that you might need to produce in the event of future litigation, rest easy. To date, no court has targeted multifunction printers with hard drives in its data retention policy. Sorry CBS.

Konica Minolta Bizhub 223: Big Features, Low Cost

By Sean Doherty

Printer News: The Last of the Konica Minolta Bizhub 423 Series Laser Printers Delivers Plenty of Features For Less

DBZ-78-PN-500

The Konica Minolta bizhub 223 is the last monochrome, multifunction laser printer in the bizhub 423 series, but not the least. The printer shares many of the choice features of the more expensive bizhubs 423, 363, and 283: a 8.5-inch color touch-screen, two 500-sheet paper trays and the ability to print directly from a USB device. But the 223 has the lowest MSRP of the bunch while still offering speedy output up to 22 pages per minute.

Like other bizhub 423 series printers, the bizhub 223 features color and monochrome scans at speeds of up to 70 originals per minute at 300 dots-per-inch resolution, a configurable user interface to print from the desktop, and operates as the endpoint in TWAIN scanning from network computers.

The bizhub 223 offers standard security features that let you password protect print jobs and restrict access to the printer by user or computer. Although it’s the smallest printer in the bizhub 423 series, the 223 supports Konica Minolta’s PageScope Enterprise Suite to configure and manage the printer, as well as set up accounts for user access.

The Konica Minolta Bizhub 283 Boasts 1000 New Features

By Sean Doherty

Printer News: Security No Afterthought in the New Konica Minolta Bizhubs

DBZ-77-PN-500

It would take more than just a blog post to describe the over 1,000 new features in the next generation of Konica Minolta bizhub 423 series of monochrome, multifunction printers. So instead, I'll just detail a few highlights.

Typical of the series, the new bizhub 283 sports an 8.5-inch color touch-screen that lets you see and use many of the new features right from the console such as printing from a USB device directly connected to the printer and scanning output to email and network stores.

The bizhub 283 offers monochrome laser prints at 28 pages per minute and fast, high-resolution black-and-white and color scans up to 70 originals per minute. Like other printers in the 423 series, you can configure the printer software to suit your printing needs and scan output from the desktop.

All the printers in the bizhub 423 series include standard security features that you may not see in other printers unless you add expensive options. For example, the 283 includes encrypted password protection for print jobs — as well as an optional 250-GB hard disk drive that only operates inside the printer — and printer software that overwrites copies of spent jobs so content does not remain stored on the hard drive.

Meet the Konica Minolta Bizhub C35, a Heavyweight Contender

By Sean Doherty

Printer News: Konica Minolta Bizhub C35 Prints on Both Sides of Heavy Paper

DBZ-74-PN-500

Don't let the Konica Minolta's bizhub C35 color multifunctional printer's sleek, svelte good looks fool you: this baby was built for heavy lifting.

A compact 20-inch square design means the bizhub C35 can fit neatly in your work area, whether atop a standard paper tray or optional trays that hold up to 1,350 sheets of paper. But the MFP can also print dense media — up to 110-pound index paper — on both sides, and boasts printing speeds up to 31 pages per minute in black-and-white and color.

The C35 claims a fast first page out in less than 13 seconds after you press the print button. It includes a 120-gigabyte hard disk drive that stores and encrypts scanned output and overwrites expired data from spent print and copy jobs with new data from pending jobs. A secure printing function requires you to authenticate from the printer's 4.3-inch color display to access restricted output. You can also send print jobs and receive scan jobs over an encrypted communication channel.

The MFP can scan originals directly to email, local and shared file stores, and USB memory in TIFF, JPEG, XPS, as well as compact and encrypted PDF formats. Printer software enables you to put all your favorite printer settings in one window.

Konica Minolta Bizhub 363 Boasts High Volume Productivity

By Sean Doherty

Printer News: Konica Minolta Bizhub 423 Series Is Easy on the Eyes and a Fast Finisher

DBZ-71-PN-500

Riddle me this: what's black and white but scans in color? The multifunctional Konica Minolta bizhub 363 might only print in black and white, but its built-in 8.5-inch color touch-screen will catch your eye as you print, copy, fax, or scan color output to email and network storage.

The bizhub 363 also supports printing from a USB device, and if you add an optional web browser feature, you can surf the web or the intranet from the console to print and save content to a standard 250 GB hard disk drive.

The printer boasts a 667 MHz processor and 2 GB of memory that supports high-resolution output and prints up to 36 pages per minute. If your printer stops the current print job for any reason (like lack of paper), the bizhub 363 skips that job and begins processing the next job in its queue. A "My Tab" feature in the printer software lets you customize your favorite printer settings in one window.

For the security-minded user, the printer supports disk encryption and will automatically overwrite content stored on the hard drive from completed jobs with new content from active and pending jobs. The bizhub 363 is a finisher too. It supports an optional job separator, staple finisher, punching unit and saddle stitch and folding unit.

Printer News: Konica Minolta bizhub 423 Offers Fast Black-and-White Prints and Color Scans

DBZ-60-PN-500

Locked and loaded. That's how we'd describe the multifunction, monochrome bizhub 423 laser printer from Konica Minolta. The company claims it's souped-up this printer with more than 1,000 features above and beyond its predecessor. While that number is difficult to verify in a blog post, here's a brief overview of some of the highlights you'll appreciate: it outputs up to 42 pages per minute, offers duplex printing, supports high resolutions, has a 650 sheet paper capacity (3,650 with optional trays) and a 150,000-page per month duty cycle, and scans up to 70 color originals per minute.

Preview and print documents on the printer's roomy 8.5-inch color, touch-panel display. You can also scan docs from the console to email, a USB device, or a network file server, or scan them directly from a PC using a Windows TWAIN driver. Either way, you can store scanned output on a built-in 250-gigabyte hard drive that supports up to 1,000 individual user boxes.
