OKI CX3535/CX4545 MFP Series – viable solution for a multifunctional business environment

By Databazaar Blog

OKI CX3535_CX4545 MFP Series

A departure from the traditional MFPs, OKI DATA introduces the new CX3535/CX4545 MFP series that are designed to cater to the various print/scan/copy needs of a working environment. This series also has the option of sending high-speed fax. Additionally, they are ENERGY STAR compliant. The print and copy speed and output timings are very fast: CX4545 offers 45 copies per minute while the CX3535 offers 35 copies per minute. They not only provide a quick output but also one that is high in quality.

With duplex print and copy capability, these MFPs can handle heavier paper stock and banner paper up to 47 inches in length. There are a variety of data input options to choose from and the large LCD display and QWERTY keyboard allow easy entry of web addresses or e-mail access. Compatible with a variety of operating systems—Windows, Mac, Linux and UNIX—these MFPs can also store various print/scan/copy templates in the 80 GB hard disk drive accompanying them. A host of other business applications such as Google Docs can also be accessed through optional connectors.

What's more, one can save the time spent in outsourcing the processed documents to copy shops with the optional kit available that includes options for stapling, arranging the documents etc. With the facility of saving data on the hard disk drive, it is but natural for users to be worried about data security. The AES Encryption helps in preventing any outsider from accessing the data stored inside the hard disk since it is erased by the optional Data Overwrite Enabler.

Summary

The OKI DATA CX3535/CX4545 MFP Series includes multifunction devices with productivity-enhancing features. The OKI open-platform software simplifies adding external applications.

Oki MB780, MB790f, MB790m: Laser Printers or Space Stations?

By Sean Doherty

Printer News: Oki Printing Solutions MB700 Series Monochrome Printers Offer Fast, Personalized Output

DBZ-117-PN-500

Oki Printing Solutions' MB700 series of black and white laser printers look like some sort of space station thanks to a unique design in which the scanner resides far above the printer's output tray. With this series Oki aims to personalize the multifunction printing experience whether you print from your computer or the large nine-inch color screen (the window on space station's mess hall no doubt). You can print from a USB memory device containing your personal printing preferences.

The series has three models: the MB780, the MB790f with a 50-sheet stapler finisher, and the MB790m, which includes a 4-bin, 100-sheet mailbox to file output by user or by function.

The MB700 printers offer black-and-white print speeds up to 55 pages per minute and a first-page out in approximately nine seconds. The MB780 has a 650-sheet standard paper capacity while the MB790f and 790m offer 1,200 sheets out of the box. However, the MB780 supports a maximum of 3,200 sheets while the other two printers max out at 2,300 sheets but offer more options for envelope handling. The printers support a monthly duty cycle of 275,000 pages and include a standard 75-sheet, two-sided, automatic document feeder.

The printers use a 600 MHz processor and support an optional 80 GB hard disk to help handle multiple functions. You can boost the 256 MB of memory to 1 GB.

Refurbished, remanufactured, pre-owned, etc. — these are all euphemisms for "used." When I ask people whether they would consider buying a used printer, I have heard responses ranging from "I never buy anything new" to "I never buy anything used." Regardless of where you reside on that spectrum, buying a used printer is not about you, it's about how printing technology fits your budget and needs.

Used Equipment Is Refurbished, Not Remade

The refurbished technology market (often referred to as the secondary market) consists of resellers, dealers, and distributors that conduct hundreds of billions of dollars worth of technology sales annually. Used equipment isn't just a big business, it's also a green business as it keeps equipment in use that would otherwise wind up in a landfill.

Printers are returned to the manufacturer or seller for many reasons — defective, damaged in transit, a cosmetic flaw, demo units, unsold inventory past its prime, and trade-in programs (e.g., HP Trade-In Program).

Once returned to the manufacturer or reseller, printers are not simply boxed and resold as new. That would violate federal and state consumer protection laws. The used printers are repaired and restored to their original condition by replacing damaged or defective parts. They're then tested, as if new, to make sure they meet performance specifications.

The primary reason to purchase a used printer is budget. If you have a lean budget, then a refurbished printer may suit your needs. However, you will not get the latest and greatest printer. And you will most likely not get the same warranty for a used printer that you would for a new one. For example HP, OKI, and Xerox all have a 90-day warranty on refurbished products. If you buy a used printer from Epson, you may not have the option to return it unless the unit fails to work right out of the box.

When Used Printers Make Sense

Used printers make the most sense in a business setting. A workgroup, departmental, or enterprise-class printer can cost thousands of dollars. It makes the most sense to consider used printers at the high end of the market to reduce costs. Organizations maintain multiple printers on premise, so print jobs can be rerouted to operational printers in the event of equipment failures. In addition, organizations have support teams, service contracts, and ongoing relationships with technology vendors that enable them to deal with used printer issues quickly and efficiently.

By contrast, individual consumers and small businesses may want to think twice about used printers. For individuals especially, the hazards of buying used printing equipment, or what historically was someone else's problem, makes little sense. If used equipment fails, most people do not have a backup printer, and lack a support team or support contract to get the unit fixed. Rather than accepting the risks inherent in purchasing used printers, take a close look at new printers, especially since consumer class printers are relatively cheap nowadays. All-in-one inkjet printers that also scan and fax documents cost as little as two or three hundred dollars. That same amount buys an entry-level laser printer. In return, you will have equipment with a warranty of up to one year and a telephone support line.

So that's that story on used printers. Our advice does not necessarily apply to other used goods such as cars.
