Lexmark T656DNE Black and White Laser Printer Sports Touch Screen

By Databazaar Blog

Printer News: Lexmark Trades Buttons for a Touch Screen on New T656DNE Laser Printer

DBZ-738-PN-Lexmark-T656dne-10-06-09-500

Buttons are out. Touch screens are in. Lexmark's new T656DNE, a high-volume monochrome laser printer, features a 7-inch color touch screen.

Once upon a time, you only touched your printer to turn it on, clear a paper jam, or insert paper. The Lexmark T656DNE's touch screen may strike some as more sizzle than steak, but if your printer sits in a public place such as a reception area, you can run a promotional slide show on the touch screen when it's not in use. From the touch screen you can also print previously uploaded forms, adjust the printer's settings, choose from among 18 languages, and access your own custom applications.

Beyond the touch screen, you'll find a fast and powerful printer that prints duplex up to 55 pages per minute and has a capacity of 4,300 pages with optional high-capacity feeders and trays. Without all the options, it holds 650 pages and weighs just 53 pounds. With specs like that, the predecessor T650 series can't touch the new T656DNE.

Canon PIXMA MP490 Inkjet Printer Focuses on Print Quality

By Databazaar Blog

Printer News: Canon Cuts Some Corners With the PIXMA MP490 But You May Not Care

DBZ-718-PN-500

If you build it, they won't necessary come, but if you build it and sell it cheap, you've got a fighting chance even during the Great Recession. That's the philosophy behind Canon's new PIXMA MP490 Photo All-in-One inkjet printer.

The PIXMA MP490 cranks out lab-quality 4x6 inch photos in about 43 seconds using four inks (it can print photos as large as 8x10 inches). Unlike pricier printers, Canon has cut some corners. For example, the LCD screen measures just 1.8 inches, and there's no WiFi, duplex printing, or fax capability. However, the PIXMA MP490 offers some advanced features such as a nearly instantaneous warmup, automatic recognition of scanned items, and professional color copies.

Clearly, Canon gave some thought to what a certain class of consumers want and what they don't care about. If you just want to print high-quality photos from one computer and have a copier and scanner handy just in case, the PIXMA MP490 may suit you.

Epson Artisan 810 Aims to Please Gadget Hounds and Families Alike

By Databazaar Blog

Printer News: Epson Artisan 810 All-in-One Inkjet Printer Replaces the Artisan 800

DBZ-726-PN-500

Epson showed us its Artisan 800 in July 2008 in a faux living room complete with a comfy black leather sofa. The only item missing was a yuppie — he was probably at the office working late.

Perhaps because of the recession or perhaps because the Artisan is now an established brand, Epson didn't build a living room around the new Artisan 810 this time around. Instead, Epson just had it sitting on a table in a hotel lounge.

But we're actually more excited about the 810 than the 800 because savvy consumers (like you) often resist buying "Rev A" models. Instead, they wait to buy the second generation.

So what's new? We suspect Epson made improvements under the hood, but specs-wise not much has changed. You can print from your iPhone/iPod Touch, charge USB devices thanks to the new port on front, take advantage of more built-in printing projects, and fax documents from your computer (Windows only). Unfortunately, the 810 lacks automatic duplexing though you can add this functionality by purchasing a duplexer.

Canon Selphy CP790 Photo Printer Gives New Meaning to the Term All-in-One

By Databazaar Blog

Printer News: Print Buckets of Photos With Canon's SELPHY CP790

DBZ-713-PN 07-09-09 500

If you buy Canon's new SELPHY CP790 Compact Photo Printer, keep it away from your toddler as he's likely to fill it with water. The SELPHY CP790 comes with a "Storage Basket" that holds the printer, paper, and ink cassettes. Nice idea, but why did Canon design it to look like a bucket? On the plus side, if the printer ever dies, you can use the basket to chill a bottle of wine.

Basket aside, this nifty new SELPHY features a 3 inch LCD screen for previewing photos, an Easy-Scroll Wheel for selecting functions, and fast printing (47 seconds for a 4x6 inch borderless photo). Plus it might qualify as the world's first green printer — the color green that is.

The SELPHY CP790 prints photos from your Mac or PC, but you can also print PC-free thanks to a memory card slot, PictBridge, infrared, and Bluetooth (optional). The SELPHY CP790 does not run on batteries, but it's reasonably portable thanks to its small size, compact power adapter — and of course that basket.

Epson Stylus NX415 All-in-One Printer Emphasizes Photos

By Databazaar Blog

DBZ-715-PN-500

Printer News: Epson Stylus NX415 Can Scan and Copy, But its Strong Suit Lies in Printing Lab-Quality Photos

How can you differentiate between a consumer printer and a business printer? Consumer printers emphasize photos (and single users) whereas business printers emphasize documents (and multiple users). Epson's new Stylus NX415 is a multifunction USB printer with an emphasis on photos. And Epson has shipped it just in time for the back to school shopping season.

The Stylus NX415 sports an LCD screen and prints borderless photos from your Mac or PC, your digital camera via PictBridge, or memory cards. The DURABrite ink and embedded image correction technology (redeye removal, photo restoration, etc.) produces lab-quality results. We saw some photos from this printer at an Epson press event in New York and can attest to their quality.

That said, the Stylus NX415 is no mere photo printer. You'll also find manual double-sided printing (Windows only much to our consternation) and color copying and scanning (flatbed only — clearly geared at photos rather than documents). The price is nice too at $99.99.

Epson WorkForce 310 Multifunction Printer Offers Speedy, Wireless Printing

By Databazaar Blog

Printer News: WorkForce 310 Brings a Lower Price Point for Epson's Popular Mulifunction Line

DBZ-714-PN500

Epson launched its WorkForce line of printers in 2008. Both consumers and reviewers seem to like them. Not surprisingly, Epson recently released the WorkForce 310, a new model geared at small businesses that want a multifunction printer, thus excluding the 30 and 40, but don't need all the bells and whistles of the 500 and 600.

Smaller than the 500 and 600, the WorkForce 310 prints slightly faster at up to 36 pages per minute (16 at laser quality), reflecting its next-generation print engine. It also features both Ethernet and WiFi connectivity, dual black cartridges to lessen the frequency of replacement, DURABrite pigment inks for longer lasting prints, and copying, scanning, and faxing via a 30 page automatic document feeder.

Sounds great, but what does it lack? It does not have a color LCD screen or automatic duplexing (it has manual duplexing, a feature that has never made much sense to us). It also lacks a high price, selling for just $79.99 for a limited time thanks to an instant $50 rebate.

Xerox WorkCentre 3220 Multifunction Laser Is Fast and Cheap

By Databazaar Blog

Printer News: Xerox WorkCentre 3220 Multifunction Laser Doesn't Print in Color But Offers Everything Else

DBZ-707-PN500

You can now buy an iPhone for $99. The catch is that the two years of service will cost you at least $1,700, probably more. But such pricing works because most people think in the present tense. Inkjet manufacturers have long used this trick. With the new WorkCentre 3220 multifunction laser printer, Xerox has jumped into the game as well.

Priced at just $549, this handsome-looking printer offers speeds of 30 pages per minute, Adobe PostScript 3 for printing complex graphics, Ethernet networking, duplex printing, and support for USB memory drives. It can also copy, scan, and fax.

So what's the catch? It's a monochrome printer. It'll also cost you more per page in toner than Xerox's pricier laser printers. Nonetheless, we would like to see more printers with Postscript and consider the WorkCentre 3220 worth a look for that reason alone. Also, kudos to Xerox for listing cost per page.

HP Photosmart Premium With TouchSmart Web Brings the Internet to Your Inkjet Printer

By Databazaar Blog

Printer News: HP Sees the Future of Printing in Online Apps Built Into its New Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web

DBZ-704-PN-06-22-09500

We've long covered printers with PC-free features such as printing from memory cards or via PictBridge. But with the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web, which we recently saw firsthand in New York City, HP has upped the ante.

The HP Photosmart Premium looks like a multifunction inkjet printer with an iPhone for a control panel. It's not really an iPhone of course, but a 4.33 inch touch screen from which you can run special Web-enabled apps.

For example, do you like Sudoku puzzles? You can print one anytime you want using the Sudoku app. Need directions? Enter your "here" and "there" and print a Google Map. Going shopping? Print some coupons. You get the idea. Other apps include Fandango for movie tickets, Snapfish for photos, weather reports, and various projects for kids from DreamWorks and Nickelodeon. HP promises more apps, all of which are free to use.

Will people want to print directly from the Web? We can certainly think of some use cases but only time will tell. HP is leaving nothing to chance. Its printer boss, Vyomesh Joshi, helped announce the Photosmart Premium, and HP has even launched a Twitter stream. HP often ships printers without even a press release.

The HP Photosmart Premium also handles old-fashioned PC printing with speeds up to 33 pages per minute. It copies, scans, and faxes. And like a few other HP printers, the Photosmart Premium can print screenshots from your Playstation PS3. Who wants to frame their college diploma when you can instead frame your score in Killzone 2.

Lexmark T652n and T654n Offer Speedy and Quiet Laser Printing

By Kara Hiltz

Printer News: Lexmark T652n and Lexmark T654n Reduce Cost Per Page With High-Yield Toner Cartridges

DBZ-564-PN500

If the Lexmark T652n and the Lexmark T654n were roleplaying characters, they'd belong to the Thief class, with high speed stats and the ability to stay quiet. Lexmark designed these monochrome laser printers for high speeds and heavy work volumes.

The T652n and T654n models come network-ready as evidenced by the "n" in the model name. Lexmark also sells the T652dn/T654dn, which adds duplex printing and the T652tn/T654dtn, which adds a paper tray.

Jeff Roberts, Lexmark's Manager of Channel Marketing, seemed particularly excited about the extra high-yield cartridges for the T654n when we spoke with him. He says that you'll print 36,000 pages from an extra high-yield toner cartridge, which means you'll throw fewer cartridges into landfills. In the role-playing world, your alignment increase a few points for that, but in the real world you'll have to settle for a lower cost per page.
